I was just told now by customer service that I can only pick a seat *24* hours in advance and not 48 hours. Does that sound right? They said: "I'm sorry but you can do a free seat within 24 hours before flight departure as your account number in Cathay is not registered on your booking."
EDIT:
"I just add your Cathay membership number on your booking. Meaning to say you will be eligible for 48 hours."
