The SFO-LIS fare is E1200.
The "free stopover" option makes me take a partner airline via some other US city, and is E1700!
I was considering booking the SFO-LIS-VLC fare (hand luggage only) and then either:
1. Simply don't go back to the airport for the LIS-VLS the next day, but instead book another ticket just LIS-VLC for the following day. This is a skip-lag strategy. I've never done that before. I'm only considering it due the deceptively advertised (not) free stopover.
2. Claim to have missed the connecting flight and see if they will put us on another one (granted it's a bit of a stretch to show up 2 days later

)
Any thoughts?
Go for it. I'm guessing you won't be tortured by the ethical dilemma you raise, and TP has far too much on its plate to start policing these situations - and in practical terms there's very little it could do, anyway. Maybe forget the second option though: it's unlikely to go the way you'd hope.
Of course all bets are off if it's a return trip. In that situation miss a flight, and you'll find cancellations ripple through the rest of your ticket.
