Slightly OT, but I had problems with this in Macau last week. Stores still accept cash without problem (MOP, HKD and often CNY), but I wanted to get a Macau Pass IC card for buses and light rail. Interestingly, the counters at light rail and bus stations do not sell these. You have to get them from vending machines that are labelled exclusively in Chinese and accept only Alipay etc for payment. Some kind stranger took a HKD100 note from me and paid MOP100 with his Alipay.
It's exactly these kinds of small-value transactions that are most troublesome for cash users. Providing a cash option sometimes comes with enormous cost and is simply not viable for these.
