The distance between the airport and town should not be a decision factor here. Difference is minimal (we are talking about 15 min max between SAI and HAN). You said it will be their first time out of their country, so I believe Angkor will be much more memorable than Hanoi, although I like Hanoi a lot. It all depends also if they live in a big town or in the countryside and their own tastes. As others have said, the main factor to take into consideration is the physical ability to visit the temples. No need to be a super athlete but being able to climb irregular steps up and down and walk sometimes under the sun.
