Yeah, I think doing it at the airport is a lot easier. IRROPS have different policies than schedule changes, and res agents primarily handle the latter, whereas airport agents almost exclusively handle the former.
My agent definitely had to call a help desk to "remove the redemption" before the system would permit it.
But she had no issue with my companion who was on a flight pass.
I had the same thing on an Aeroplan ticket last year, where the flight cancelled after I was checked in, but I was still at home the evening before travel. I was dealing with an AC agent on the phone, and she also had to call another desk to "remove the redemption" before she could override what the computer automatically protected me on, to put me on the earlier flight I was asking for. I was just happy to have an agent willing to put in the effort to make it happen.
