1. Try asking to refare the original leg as an one-way, not likely to help but some routes don't have an oneway
2. Change the return to the cheapest qualifying flight. Read the fare rules to understand the limitations. This works best if the original trip was business and you rebook as economy Rebook at various times to far the cheapest date. The goal is to get a standard fare change FFC that then can be used. This can release a portion of the fare.

Read the other example in this thread for other ideas.
so I was able to rebook it as a one way from Milan to Ewr on November 15th. I just paid an extra $1. Now when I cancel it it goes back to the original PNR. I guess unless there is a schedule change I won’t get a credit. :-( back to the drawing board. Thanks for your help
