The "Aéroport" ticket is indeed a scam, as :
- only those 10€ tickets are sold by the machines located at the airport
- all other tickets (including the 1.70 single ticket) are valid to/from the airport (just not sold there - but can be bought downloading the 'Lignes d'Azur' app without the 2€ magnetic card fee)
- the tram is free between the airport and Grand Arénas, where Nice St Augustin train station is (and where there are 'conventional' ticket machines, just like at any other non-airport station - this is another workaround)

There has been some debate last year when the new fares were introduced. The local officials openly state that this is a way to tax tourists (https://www.20minutes.fr/societe/404...ons-transports). Quite weird, just as some other aspects (the 10 journey ticket costs 10x a single ticket... So what's the point ?).

Can I use return portion of the ride in the NCE>town direction on another trip? If so, how long is it valid?
Technically it should work, and unless I am mistaken the validity is a year after purchase. However the return is supposedly used towards the airport, so better using it for a journey going in the appropriate general direction to avoid debate in case of a ticket check.
