I never heard the fruit salad version, just a reference to wine counting as a fruit (or fruit and vegetable) group serving. This is supposedly food of which we all should be eating more.

A couple years ago someone (USA Today???) published a list of favorite Thanksgiving foods by state. Minnesota said grape salad, which caused an uproar here because no one had ever heard of grape salad, although I've since seen a recipe. I don't remember what was in it besides grapes.
