If you go to Asia / America / Australia at least one a year just position to Japan once and then keep going.... I did that in the past for many years. If you don't need to stay in TYO it is usually relatively easy to ffind flight coneections on Star in TYO to go to your final destination. I usually booked my first few segments, sometimes changed then and had the last flights on some random dates at the end of the validity. Later I changed flights and/or routing for the rest of the ticket when my travel plans became clear. That is relatively inexpensive, but depending on how you book the ticket not so easy.
