I had no idea that I couldn't use a free night certificate (as opposed to points) for someone else. So I've got a rez in my name in my town for tonight for a friend. I could go down to the hotel and check in for them if absolutely necessary. I obviously don't want to do that if I don't have to and also don't want to do that as an emergency situation where they can't check in. Would be awkward. I also can check in online now since it is for tonight. Not sure what then happens at hotel. I haven't stayed much at Marriotts so am not sure.

I would reco you do the on-line check-in, call the hotel to get the FD to add your friend to the reservation and let them know that the other person will be arriving first. So long as the other person has an ID that matches the name you added and a credit card to swipe for incidentals there should be no issue. I have done this many times, but have also always shown up later, but by then it's a moot point as the other person already has a key card and full access to the hotel/room.
