Actually status recognition works well for me at Hilton and Marriott as long as we won't talk about the full service properties in Europe and Africa. In the US and Asia, they are overrun by Toptier Elites and as lowly Gold status member, of course I do not expect any recoghnition or benefits besides the basics.
As Marriott Gold you get no perks except the minimal bonus. I'm LTP and I only get the whatever stayed by the book even in Europe - CY Bremen and Wolfsburg - straight one category upgrade. Now I don't even bother asking for upgrade unless we are taking the kids or we know the rooms are tiny.
The FS Marriott in Hamburg are really terrible and I haven't been back after those incidents. I also learned from them that if they said they will give me a nice room it means the worst room.
