Sorry, I screwed up and said united.com, instead of aa.com (and quoted United fare rules). AA fare rules can be found on aa.com after entering passenger info and seat selection.

The majors generally match each other's change/cancel policies, but there can be differences. So you really need to read each airlines fare rules . And it looks like in this case AA is an outlier compared to DL/UA and no longer allows cancel/changes on US-origin international BE fares (even for a fee). The $99 cancel fee for credit on AA US50 domestic fares is actually an exception to the AA BE fare rule cancel policy and only applies to BE fares booked on aa.com by AAdvantage members in US.
AA partner BA has matching US-UK BE fares, but has same $199 cancel fee policy as DL/UA. This is unusual as JV partners generally have matching policies. So if you want more flexibility, you should probably book the BA BE fares.
