Well there's no point in doing it. It's equivalent to canceling the entire reservation and rebooking with the credit.

Agree -- OP haven't flown much on AC in years but I do believe LH might give you an offer to bid / buy an upgrade for that specific flight. I've done it on LX - but not LH - recently... Note that it will be cash -- not pluspoints, though.
Yes, this is the better option, but the LH segment will need to be native LH flight number.
