Sure can happen but this is against the law, even more if the guest is not an EU citizen in case of any issue involving the police the host could be facing charges such as aiding illegal immigration. For sure not a wise move for the host.
Did you read what i wrote? All 3 met me in person to meet and greet - where (with 2 of them) I showed them my passport/did the necessary registration. My point is the OP can ask for that to happen and show his passport in person without sending his sensitive documents via text/email, etc. which was his concern.
