ANA Crowne Plaza Grand Court Nagoya
What is your Priority Club status?
Diamond
Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes-ish.
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked Standard Room, upgraded with CSU to Governor Suite. Received the same.
How are the rooms?
Room felt larger than it was (66 sqm), probably due to the rectangular shape. The room had two large windows with nice views over Nagoya, but had poor lighting and was very dark at night. The amenities are mostly modern, but furniture felt dated.
How is the exec. lounge?
As noted by others before, the hotel has a "Wing Lounge" occupying probably 1/3 of the top floor (30F) bar. When I booked the hotel I asked IHG customer care to check whether lounge pass is applicable, and was told that as the lounge is named "Wing Lounge", it is not a club lounge and therefore lounge pass does not provide access. However, customer care confirmed that if I upgraded with a CSU, I will be able to access the lounge. When I tried to use it, the lounge staff denied me access and told me to "talk to the front desk manager" (verbatim). The front desk manager initially said that it was only available to people who booked high-floor rooms through the hotel's own website, then said that because I used a milestone reward, lounge access was excluded. After I showed her my messages with IHG customer care, she gave me one-day lounge access as a one-time courtesy.
The lounge itself is nothing special. Every guest receives a glass of champagne and a small plate of desserts. There are free-flowing beverages and chips available.
What was good and what was bad?
The good:
- Room was very clean
- 1 minute to Kanayama Station, which is a lot less hectic than Nagoya Station but almost as convenient
- Reasonable reward night rates
The bad:
- Room was dated and very dark
- Extortionist parking rate
- Wi-Fi was encrypted but rather slow (20 Mbps)
The ugly:
- Single-use toiletries
The Grand Court:
- The hotel really just screams stingy. When I first stayed there 6-7 years ago, they overcharged me for double occupancy and only agreed to refund me when I contacted customer care. This time, no welcome amenity was offered. When asked, I received one drink voucher for 4 nights of double occupancy. When I asked if I would also just receive one free breakfast had I chose breakfast, the front desk staff said yes. All these plus the "Wing Lounge not Club Lounge" situation, it really felt that the hotel is doing everything it can to lowball guests who did not book through their own websites.
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
I probably would not have stayed had my CSU not cleared (because I'm sure the hotel would put us in a double bed standard room). But with CSU, 20K/night was very good value during Obon. I don't usually visit Nagoya, but will probably try Inuyama next time.
