Transporting fragile luggage QF J
Hi folks,
I need to relocate an expensive mechanical clock from MEL->HND in a few days, flying Qantas business. I'm tossing up taking it as hand luggage vs checked in. The various bits and pieces will be split into custom wooden 3 boxes, and there are two of us travelling, so we could probably get them on as hand luggage. One of the boxes will have the clock movement, which a just a complex set of brass gears that could create some pretty pictures on the x-ray machines. Another will have a wood and glass case, and the third more glass plates.
I checked the Qantas website for guidance travelling with fragile luggage, and they basically say they won't accept any liability for damage to checked in luggage beyond minimal legal requirements (domestically in Aus, that's $1300 AUD max liability, and the clock is worth a lot more than that). OTOH, I'm uncertain if I'm going to have issues with the size of the carry on luggage (one box is beyond the international carry on dimensions), and also security procedures for a complex metal device, albeit one that doesn't actually violate any carry on restrictions other than size.
Anyway, I guess I'm just seeking any anecdotal experience and tips from people travelling with fragile stuff on Qantas. E.g., does checking stuff in with Fragile stickers actually help at all? Will putting glass plates in your checked-in luggage end in sure disaster? If it's a special item that still fits in the overhead lockers, will Qantas be a bit more relaxed about the carry on size restrictions for business passengers?
Appreciate any thougts, thank you!
