A shocking return journey
Flew YTZ to YHZ direct on a prop from Billy Bishop. A slight delay due to a request for volunteers to fly the next day due to the heat and aircraft take off performance. Superb inflight service from a halifax based crew with Jenna being a top class and a brilliant cabin lead. Present in the cabin throughout, dealing with a lively stag do brilliantly, and doing little things for pax - even down the back.
However, the return flight was just plain awful AND in row 1 with Porter Reserve. Scruffy crew with surly service. We were delayed leaving halifax with no real presence in the cabin and no policing of the second bag going under a seat with the predicatble delay of putting bags in the hold. The one live PA made was only made once the bins were already full which is pointless. The snack delivered within a minute of seatbelts off at lightening speed with no second round. A beer plonked down in the can with no napkin or glassv - a glass was provided on request. I had to ask for a second drink and was told they have a one drink at a time policy and I had to finish the last mouthful. in front of the crew with aA second beer arriving with no napkin. The curtain came across with what sounded like a fun party the other side of it, with even Porter Reserve customers sent to the back to use the other bathroom with no PA explanation or good reason (other than gatecrashing the fun behind the curtain.) Service cleared away 40 mins out of Toronto, NO CABIN CHECK before landing which I find inexcusable and dangerous. No sweeping of the cabin or clearing last garbage. When the co-pilot made the announcement for cabin crew to be seated, they had done that 20 mins earlier and were busy chatting not even looking up nor embarassed. . Not even being bothered to check seatbelts or clear floors made me feel unsafe for the first time with Porter where my confidence in the competence of the cabin crew to act in an emegency just disappeared. The lousy cabin service made Porter Reserve poor value for money which is a shame given a lot of us want them to succeed in their own right and give us reason to avoid AC.
Flights to Vancouver back in March and returning from San Francisco were top notch with friendly competent crew, decent cold meals, and several rounds of drinks served with manners, professionalism and a smile, along with the free wifi clearly separates Porter from AC and Low Cost Carriers.
My optimism was high for this jet flight after my previous experience and so splashed the cash for Porter Reserve but was sorely disappointed and a little apprehensive by mediorce service from junior cabin crew who seemed more intent on socialising with each other. It makes me think twice now about Porter Reserve and Porter jets though i'll give it another go.
Porter Jets are such a refreshing change (with AC having to match to keep up) with the free wine and beer, quality snacks if a little small, free wifi and a bit of class. They shame AC with their usual delays the consistent low quality of food, dirty cabin, and poor attitude from cabin crew. I do hope however, that these are birthing pains for Porter with such rapid expansion of the jet fleet and they maintain a high standard of service consistently. Had that been my first flight on the jets - i wouldn't have come back for sure.
Delays happen, a toilet going out of service happens, ATC delays happen -but poorly trained cabin crew skipping safety checks with minimal service and presence in the cabin with pax staring at a curtain with giggles and chit chat and iphone use (do what we say - not what we do) from the other side of a curtain is inexcusable.
