Thanks again. Just to check, from what I can see you're referring to post 8 point 3? I've sent them details using that rubric using hopefully the right online form (the customer service section of the AA website is not particularly helpful). We will see what happens--I was surprised that the gate agent was so forward about the compensation issue but given that they also explicitly accepted blame perhaps there's some hope...
