The last update from WestJet - from Friday August 9 - seems to indicate that Canadian North was only operating WestJet flights this past weekend.
And ... that the other option is simply 'flight cancellations'.
WestJet service update - August 9
Across WestJet, teams continue working to perform necessary repairs and inspections to the 16 aircraft damaged by the hailstorm that impacted Calgary on the evening of August 5, 2024.
To support guests impacted by cancellations, WestJet has secured an agreement with Canadian North, allowing additional flights throughout the weekend across its network.
As a result of the significant impact to WestJet’s fleet, cancellations continue to be implemented across the airline’s network to account for decreased capacity.
Given the extent of the damage to those aircraft, it seems like repairs will take many, many weeks.
Are they simply planning on cancelling flights and consolidating passengers onto fewer flights?
With a full 10% of your fleet offline, it would seem like they would need to bring in additional capacity -- whether from Canadian North or Omni Air (who I think used to run their long-haul flights before WS aquired their own 767s) or ... anyone else?
And they must be crossing their fingers that there will be no other surprises in the coming weeks. With 16 aircraft out of commission, their ability to recover from any IRROPS (or even just one plane going offline for unexpected maintenance) ... yikes.
