Planning a first time trip to Naples and the Amalfi coast for next May (last week of May). First of all I know I shouldn't be but I am shocked at the nightly rates (so looks like $3-4k a night for anywhere great). Would love some advice on itinerary. Plan is to fly into Naples on a Wednesday, would like to see Pompeii and then spend 4 or so nights on Amalfi coast. Where do we stay to see Pompeii? Then was thinking two or three nights at Il San Pietro or Le Sirenuse?? and then a couple nights further on- Belmond, Borgo Santandrea, ?? so many choices.

Also- is it a bad idea to drive ourselves and rent a car??
