My opinion (and only my opinion) agrees with you pack it you lug it...if you cannot lift it over your head, then check it, because I sure do not want it falling on my head in case of the bin flying open...

Way too many folks expect the flight attendants to help with luggage, baby's, strollers ... maybe AA should offer this as a service and charge some $$, after all we do trip bellmen.
