My experience, at least this time was relatively painless, though amusing. I went to the counter and was instructed to customer service. The agent said he couldn't help me because he was Dollar and said I needed to wait for the Hertz guy a few feet away. That agent finished up the people he was with, insisted on helping some other people who had showed up after me saying he'd help me next. He finished up with them and then took off out the door of building without a word.
I asked the Dollar guy what was up and he shrugged. As I stood there another agent walked by and told me that the Hertz agent had gone home.
How was that painless? It sounds like you came across an agent that should be fired on the spot.
