It can take getting an agent who knows how to do the through check to one of these carriers when on separate tickets and it is also recommended to either save the above link or print out a printed copy of the above link to show an agent if they pushback on through checking bags to one of the exception carriers.
Good idea to bring this policy up... I will try my luck next time connecting between MU and DL. It was surprising that even the agent at ATL D1 check-in was reluctant and told me that "we do not through check with airlines we do not have a contract with".
