ITA aggressively monetizes seat selection across all cabins including PE and business class, and segments this more granular than seen on most other full-service airlines. On their widebodies, they treat all AC and JL two-across "duo" seats as extra premium and demand an upcharge, same goes for the first row. Pretty ridiculous considering the small cabin, but, hey, .it seems to bring in revenue...
If you plan on flying them not just this once, enroll in Volare and get status. PE seat selection fees (except bulkhead) are waived for even the lowest tier.
