Per terms and condition it just says return to city of departure but doesn't say airport of departure. Any experiences?
I think DPs are limited. I would consider departing LGA and returning to JFK as a round trip as both airports are in New York City.
If one of those were instead EWR, then it becomes trickier as it doesn't seem to meet the definitions.
That said, this did happen to me once (departing JFK, returning EWR), and when the trip started to go pear-shaped, I purchased an Amtrak (common carrier, unlike NJ Transit) ticket from EWR to New York Penn so that I would end my trip in the same city. It was maybe $15, which was my additional "insurance" against a ~$300 hotel on an overnight delay.
Amex did reimburse the hotel. I don't know if they would have if I didn't have the Amtrak segment.

If you can buy an Amtrak ticket (or maybe even Greyhound?) from Los Angeles to Santa Ana, it might be worthwhile.
