Anyone know if the travel agent story sounds right? Any advice on how we should handle?
Welcome to FlyerTalk!

So... there's no real guidance for this situation. UA-operated flights are always credited based upon the amount they were paid. Unless you paid $10K for the ticket, the PQPs awarded were way out of line with that. $621 actually sounds a lot more plausible: most airlines offer each other deeply-discounted seats for irregular operations recovery. If you were to write back and complain, I'd say there's as good of a chance that they claw back the excess as that they give your wife the extra miles and PQP.

On UA, the highest status on the reservation is inherited by everyone traveling, so if you book her on a reservation with anyone else in your family, she'll get many of the perks of Gold, including the luggage allowance and upgrade priority. I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

BTW -- you should request Original Routing Credit from BA, or whichever OneWorld program you credit to. Being re-routed onto a carrier from another alliance is a great opportunity for double-dipping.
