I stayed at the Peninsula Shanghai and Peninsula Beijing last month - 4 nights in each one.
Beijing one was excellent - the service was attentive & proactive and the staff friendly. I also really enjoyed their SPA and restaurants. Nothing to fault.
Shanghai was a different story - first 24 hours I was struggling, as the service was seriously lacking (impersonal and staff actively avoiding non-Chinese speaking guests) and their signature Chinese restaurant was one of the worst dining experiences I had. I complained to both the hotel and my TA, and thanks to my TA’s intervention and meeting with the duty manager, the rest of my stay ended up being great, never seen such a drastic change in a short time. Wish it would have been like that from the beginning, but in the end I left as a happy guest. Just make sure you don’t step into their “Yi Long Court” restaurant - particularly if you don’t speak the Chinese language!
