I recommend a fun experiment for EP runs, when you book flights with connections in the US, always try to book distance connections.
Example in business class/first:
LCG>MAD>DFW>PDX return trip: 1700 EP - Cost 2199,09 €
LCG>MAD>ORD>PDX return trip: 1600 EP - Cost 2199,45€
LCG>MAD>LAX>PDX return trip: 1490 EP - Cost 2199,45€

210 EP difference in the same amount of money is like making an intra-Europe business class one-way trip that costs around 250-300€.
