Sometimes when you volunteer and make an agreement with the GA on which flight you will switch to the GA will back you up on that flight, particularly if there's only 1-2 seats remaining. That way while waiting to see if you're actually needed the seats don't get taken. The issue is if you're not needed, which is more and more likely now with AA algos, the GA needs to take you off that flight.
