Yup. Splitting up pax on the same PNR and charging a fee to sit together seems like calculated misery and a way to try to extract more $$ from each pax. Shady.

They paid $50 to sit together. Even though they had WS status (Gold/Plat) on an Econo fare. (Yes, I'd expect they could have got the fee waived via calling in, but they hadn't pre-selected seats using a voucher in advance, so the only online options at check-in were to sit separate in middle seats, pay $50, or phone WS and waste time trying to talk to an agent).
