Agreed. Better to pass the unopened kits back to the cabin crew, who are much more likely to re-stow them with the undistributed kits.
90% of the time, I do not open the kit. But I don't
know if I'm going to want anything from it until the end of the flight.
Sometimes I wake up, my hands are dry, and I realize I don't have any moisturizer of my own. Or chapstick. etc.
So unless I'm doing this at the gate on arrival (when I'm sure the crew really want to be opening their amenity kit storage compartment), there's no good time for it.
