On this route, DL/AM usually price exponentially higher than VB, AA, and even UA out of EWR for their nonstops. Makes sense since AM pretty much has a monopoly on Mexican based corporate travel and this is a decently heavy business route compared to most out of Mexico. For sure AM dominates. I misunderstood the question. I thought OP was curious about an AA ticket that went bad, not the other way around. The red eye return to JFK is a bit brutal in my opinion.
