Technically, CX advanced seat reservation is only offered to customers traveling on CX flight numbers operated by CX on CX ticket stock (160). AA award tickets are issued on AA (001) ticket stock so that seat selection might be suppressed. Historically, if you hold Oneworld status, you can pick a seat by calling in, although that might have changed (or you might need to HUACA). If you don't have status, historically CX has never allowed seat selection in X, S, N, or Q classes (before their new fare products went live).
CX has Amadeus theoretical seating enabled. If you have OW status, make sure it is in your booking, and it usually wont give you a terrible seat.

Wow, so it looks like I'm stuck with a middle seat for a nearly 16 hour flight unless I get really lucky in a few weeks. I checked my ticket number, and it doesn't begin in 160. It's 001. My knees are in trouble. :-(
