United's size restriction is on Length + Width + Height. As long as the sum of those three dimensions is under the limit you are good to go. The weight restriction is enforced and each bag is individually weighed. Once tagged through to the final destination, connections don't matter even though you will claim bags and clear customs in ORD. There is a drop-off point and they will not check weight or size again. If you have a large, irregularly shaped item I suggest you call United in advance. UA's staff in Japan are knowledgeable but can be sticklers on checked luggage restrictions.
Not sure what your question is on Delta having different restrictions. Different airlines have different policies.
Thank you for the explanation. As you mentioned, United's size restriction is on Length + Width + Height. I thought that Delta's restriction of 63-80” (161-203 cm) was also based on Length + Width + Height, so I was curious why Delta would be so restrictive vs United when they usually have the same policies specially on international routes.
