I've even had it happen to me once on a case where I was the volunteer, ended up not being used, and land to find my onward confirmed ticket had been cancelled. (Due to same issue probably of no-showing for protected flight)

Luckily I was able to get back on my flight through chatting with AA, but still had to find someone to check me in airside at the gate. I lost a confirmed FC upgrade because of that...
