When you accept the VDB offer, after you select your amount, instead of confirming new flights, you can choose “select new flights at the gate” which will avoid a duplicate reservation and should this problem in the future.

Nonetheless, it’s completely absurd that you would be penalized for trying to help AA avoid a IDB situation, but this is where we are today.
