Hello,

I want to bring a big item from Japan to the US, and I am trying to understand each company oversize luggage rules.

United AIrlines states that
Oversized bags

We can’t accept bags that measure (length + width + height) more than 115 inches (292 centimeters).
Does it mean as long as the bag/container is totally smaller than 292 cm they will allow it? The flight would include a connection (HND - ORD - DTW). Is that a problem?

My other option (and what I would like) is to take the direct flight that Delta has from Tokyo to Detroit. But it is more restrictive:

ASIA / MIDDLE EAST / AUSTRALIA / INDIA

EVERYWHERE
  • 63-80” (161-203 cm): $175 USD/CAD/EUR*
  • > 80” (203 cm) are not permitted
I wonder why Delta is more restrictive than United...
