Why airlines like Turkish/Air India/EVA use A gates at SFO?

Hi all,

Wasn't exactly sure what thread this belonged to so feel free to redirect this if this isn't the place for this.

But I am curious why are certain star alliance carriers relegated to the A gates as opposed to the G gates. Notably Eva, Turkish, Air India, and occasionally others are forced to the A gates. It's not like G gates is always short on space these carriers used to fly out of the G gates normally. It's convenient to go from United to G gates for a normal star alliance connection as opposed to walking all the way around.

Most recently I flew turkish out of SFO and I was coming in on a connecting flight on United and I went straight to Polaris lounge since I already had a BP ready and I knew my flight was departing from the A gates so I banked extra time to make my way across the intl check in hall. But then Turkish called me and almost canceled my flight since I hadn't come to the counter, and I had to immediately leave and go to the counter and "check-in" and then got sent straight to A gates after that. Of all the flights I've ever taken, I've never had anything like that happen to me before

I'm just curious why these guys are in A when they should be in G. Any insight is well appreciated. Thanks!
