Is there greater significance to flight numbers than simply identifying a particular flight? A bit like telephone numbers where some are used for specific services and may be free or premium. And location too, although that’s becoming strange as a city specific number may not be anywhere near the physical city.
I suspect the answer to this is yes, based on some answers to my question in regard codeshares recently. For example you also see in fare rules that flights XX5000-5999 are excluded, or an another range allowed.
