There's been a change on BA and QF (at least). When all of the pre-allocatable seats have been allocated, the seat map is taken down so that it's no longer accessible through checkmytrip.com. You'll find the same thing if you dummy book on Travelocity and look for the seat map - one will only come up so long as there are still seats left to pre-allocate.
