How to avoid auto-cancelled flights when volunteering to be bumped for a later flight
I've had 3 instances this year where I've volunteered for X amount of cash to be bumped to a later flight / different routing. Each time, they've put in the new itinerary (sans seats and without checking me in) into my record and it's shown up on the app. However, without fail, when I get to my connection point, I've been told that my onward reservation has been cancelled, despite being told by the GAs each time that everything is set and they'll remove the segments when they close out the flight.
While my plans have been flexible each time, and I have been able to grab that seat back (or a seat on an earlier flight) to my onward destination, I worry that I won't be able to be rebooked one day, and it won't count as IDB since I was counted as a 'no-show' (or it will get flagged as consistent no-showing or even skiplagging by their newfangled IT systems). Each time it adds a lot of stress to my journey, as well as time taken by airport folks, as they have to call in to get my itinerary restored.
When I've written into AA, the only response I've gotten back is completely unrelated, stating that I was confirmed on a different flight (that I never was and never flew), so their system clearly isn't capable of handling this. While I would like to continue to offer to get bumped, as the cash would be nice, and I've come up with some fun alternative routings to get me there (like changing onto a different intl flight with open SWU space), I don't want to continue to volunteer if each time is going to result in the rest of my itinerary getting pulled. Is there any way I can ensure the potential flights get pulled out before I get marked as a no show?
