Agree with the previous comments but would add that you could skip the ferry trip, Wellington, and the drive in the lower part of the north Island without losing a lot. I.e., drive from Franz Josef to either Christchurch or Nelson, drop rental car and fly to either Taupo or Rotorua (latter has more flights) and pick up another rental car.
