Exactly. And once you fly the first segment you can't SDC at all. It's too bad it's so broken/customer unfriendly. Would have certainly been better even for AA not to pay for someone to be bumped off a flight after they didn't let me onto an earlier flight with plenty of seats, after my connecting flight was early and had plenty of time to get an the earlier, otherwise illegal connection, flight.
