The app never allows you to SDC on just the connecting flight in my experience, even on domestic flights. Which is how I'd mostly want to use SDC when I arrive early or there's a delayed flight that I could now get on at the connecting point.
I would assume it is a
feature bug from AA having the restrictive SDC policy that requires you to follow the same itinerary.
