3 nights at Londolozi Tree Camp in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Introduction My wife and I spent 3 nights at Londolozi Tree Camp in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve with both of our moms. This was our second visit to the property (previously in August 2022) and we both feel that our second time visiting the property only made things better. The positives of the Londolozi experience were amplified because of our previous visit and the anticipatory and authentic nature of the service they provide was able to stand out even more. Going from Silvan to Londolozi (which literally border one another) was a slight bit of an environment change (Londolozi has a permanent river so there is more lush greenery), but mainly I was interested to see how the experiences stacked up. Our game viewing at Silvan was extremely fruitful, but I knew that the accommodations and facilities at Londolozi were going to be more significant. All in all, we are grateful to have visited both properties and equally as importantly, I’m glad we chose to visit them in the order we did. Check in/Arrival We arrived at Londolozi via road transfer, with Matt waiting to meet us while our guide and tracker from Silvan drove us to the border between the two sections of land. We loaded our bags into the Londolozi vehicle and were off headed to the lodge. From the boundary line, it was a 20 minute drive to Tree Camp. Check in was easy, as we were greeted by the team at Tree Camp lead by Ashleigh who looked after us on our last trip. It really felt like we were being greeted by an old friend, setting the tone for such an exciting 3 days to come. Room On our previous visit we stayed in Tree Camp room number 2, but this time our moms stayed in that room and we stayed in room 3. The basic setup of the rooms are similar with a large living room/sitting area, the bedroom, expansive closet space, large bathroom with soaking tub and dual vanities. Room 3 has a large deck and a private sitting space as well as a heated plunge pool. We preferred the deck arrangement of room 3 to that of room 2, but either way, the rooms of Tree Camp are a treat. In terms of privacy, there are no rooms past room 3, so the walkway ends there, meaning that no guests would walk past the entrance to our room. The heated plunge pool was excellent to use on cool evenings. Service The service during our stay at Tree Camp was extremely personal. There are only six suites in the camp and Ashleigh, Vusi, Dom, and Mathews made sure that we were always taken care of. It honestly didn’t feel like we were visiting a lodge, hosted by strangers, but rather Ashleigh went above and beyond to make my wife and I, as well as our mom’s welcome. She recognized some of our mothers’ interests and initiated activities based around these without us asking. She took initiative and took what was already a satisfying trip to the next level. We also got to see Londolozi’s great service on display when we got to eat dinner in the Tree Camp boma with a couple of the staff members while they were also serving other guests, seamlessly transitioning from sitting and chatting to helping guests at other tables. Londolozi’s person service shined through on this visit and it being our second time on property seemed to just enhance this further. I’d be hard pressed to see how we could be looked after better in a more organic and personal manner. Game Drives In just 3 nights and 6 total game drives at Londolozi we saw a wide variety of animal species including: 2 adult leopards and 3 different leopard cubs, a pride of 17 lions, 3 jackals, a pack of wild dogs plus a puppy that was just a few months old, 6 hyena cubs, a pair of honey badgers, elephants, rhino, impala, dyker, kudu, nyala, bushbuck, steenbok, water buck, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, dwarf and slender mongoose, ostrich, giraffe, scrub hare, Cape buffalo, monitor lizard, hippo, and countless bird species. Shaun (our guide) and Gaishon (our tracker) were an excellent team keeping us engaged and stimulated with new interesting information about the ecosystem on all of the drives. We had some heavy hitting game viewing at Silvan, the lodge we had just come from, but the exciting sightings continued at Londolozi. Highlights for us in terms of game viewing were seeing wild dogs interact with elephants and ultimately call their puppy out of the den, the Three Rivers female and Nkoveni female feed and spend time with their respective cubs, a pair of honey badgers one of which hissed at the vehicle as we spotted them coming to a screeching halt before scurrying off into the bushes, a hyena den with a mother and 6 different cubs, as well as a pride of 17 lions (5 adult females and 12 cubs of varying ages and genders sleeping playing as the sun rose.Shaun’s experience as a guide was a huge plus for us being able to provide detailed information about all the animals and plants we saw. Gaishon did a great job of contributing to our experience by spotting animals we have no idea how he got to spot and adding some of his own wildlife commentary during coffee breaks and sundowners. They were a great team for us and enhanced our experience out in the bush. Dining As we recalled from our last visit, Londolozi’s dining continued to be excellent from all perspectives. The dining experience when on safari really seems never ending. Beginning with the coffee and biscuits left in a basket along with a 5:45am knock on the door, a coffee break to stretch the legs during the morning game drive, a la carte breakfast served on the deck, lunch also served on the deck, small snacks offered during our sundowner, and dinner offered either on the deck or in the Tree Camp boma. Breakfasts were excellent consisting of a wide variety of hot and cold items. One of my favorites was the breakfast burrito and one of my wife’s favorite was the breakfast bagel. We also got the privilege of being served a packed breakfast one morning at a lookout over a section of the river in the bush where we dined as elephants passed by. This was certainly a treat. For lunches, the a la carte menu rotated, but a couple of my favorite dishes were the crispy chicken Caesar, the chicken bao bun, and the charcuterie plate. Dinner was the highlight meal for me with the soups and Londolozi salad always being excellent starters, the fish dishes and braii as excellent mains, as well as the chocolate tart being my favorite dessert. Vusi did an excellent job of making sure we had everything we needed and we really appreciated his consistency and efforts with us. Location/Facilities Londolozi is located in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, bordered by various other privately owned pieces of land (Singita, Mala Mala, etc.). You are truly in the land of leopards in this area and the overall game viewing is extremely dense. Londolozi’s specific piece of land is large, allowing you to hardly ever see another vehicle during the drives (the most that can go out at one time is 15). Additionally, you will only see Londolozi cars unless there is a special sighting that warrants a maximum of 2 Singita cars to come onto the Londolozi land and vice versa (we did not see this occur on this trip).Londolozi consists of 5 different camps all which operate independently from one another in the sense that you will never see other guests from other camps, unless you visit the spa, boutique, or gym. The boutique has plenty of nice souvenirs to choose from and the gym has all the equipment that one might need to get a good workout in. One thing that we saw this time that we did not get to see last time was the staff village area. We were able to see where all the staff live as well as sit down for a talk with Dave Varty highlighting the history of Londolozi and some of his visions for it moving forward. Overall In summary, we loved Londolozi in 2022 and it was even better this time around. All of the positives that I recalled from my previous trip remained constant and the personalization of this trip simply enhanced things. A highlight to Ashleigh and her team for looking after us and ensuring we had a good experience. Making both of our moms feel treated was also a huge plus for us. The part of safari that all the pictures and reviews online don’t fully encapsulate is the emotional side and the way the personal service, high quality food and accommodation, and the spectacular wildlife sightings make you feel. Londolozi and specifically the team at Tree Camp definitely know how to get this right.
