It turned out to be impossible for me to do a paid seat selection for the TK flight on a UA ticket, via the website, the app, or on the phone with Turkish Airlines customer service. The gate agent was able to change my seat, which was fine - but the seat I really wanted was long gone by then, and I was not able to get a "premium" seat under any circumstances.
