Ask for the air ticket to be endorsed over to LNER via Accessrail. Unless he has accepted the new booking he can't no show for something he hasn't agreed to on another day. If he takes the train he can still claim EC261 even if on Accessrail so long as they are delayed or depart early outside the usual -1 to +2 hour bands. ORC is possible, see the ORC guide.
