If the two one-ways idea above doesn't work for you and you don't want to bother with the two cancel/rebooks, perhaps request the ETC be converted to miles (should be 2500 miles). That's possibly no great value to you, but at least then it doesn't go poof.
And I'll chime in with yet another option for the $50 ETC if all else fails. ETC can be used for anyone so any family member or friend of yours will be happy to have a $50 discount on an airfare they're purchasing anyway.
