There was some talk of diverting at one point but the flight deck advised it was basically back to JNB or onwards to BCN. I know the A380 has significant limitations on the airfields it can use, but is that really the case for a medical emergency? For a major technical problem I know it's a case of just getting it down.
No that is correct.
I was on the A380 from JNB and a bag of medical fluid (saline) had been used on the way out and not replaced. Was chatting to the Pilot as they had to send someone to find a bag from somewhere which they eventually did. He said he couldn't really chance it as once we left JNB it is return to JNB or BCN. There really isn't any other option that they could land that isn't a massive divert and even then they can't handle an A380 etc etc and it would just turn into a complete nightmare.....
So yes, that is correct, options are limited....
