Be aware Air NZ is very strict about carry on as well. Make sure your carry on is definitely under 7.0 kg -- they do not make any allowances at all even if you happen to be very slightly over. I was pulled aside with a 9kg bag and even after I threw out some things to get it down to 7.1kg they refused to let me on and was told I would be offloaded unless I paid up. Ended up paying $40 to gate check the bag (which was annoying as I wouldn't have thrown stuff away had I known I'd have to gate check it anyway). Funnily enough despite flying with JQ a couple times a year over the last 10-15 years I've never had my carry on weighted on JQ. I fly around 15-20 sectors a year on NZ and I religiously check my bag weight these days -- just not worth the hassle of arguing with their gate agents over a 0.1kg overage. Yep very different in our part of the world. YMMV.
